Bow River Law employment lawyer Sarah Coderre talks about written employment warnings, and how, whether you are required to sign it depends on what it says. If it is merely an acknowledgement that you have received a warning, you should generally sign it, but if it says you are acknowledging you have engaged in misconduct, if you disagree you should not necessarily sign it. An example of something employers give warnings for is absenteeism: if you are just acknowledging that you have been absent and received a warning, that is not problematic, but if you were absent and have a reasonable explanation, you may need to provide that context in writing. You may be acknowledging that you have been warned, but not necessarily that you agree you deserve a written warning or the employer’s version of events.
