Education is a basic human right and the foundation of nation building. In rural Sindh, only 20% of girls enrol at middle level, as compared to 47% of boys. In urban areas, that rate increases to 66% for girls and 72% for boys. Girls who complete secondary school education are better able to participate in economic and social activities and raise healthier and better educated children. They contribute to more stable societies, which give all individuals the opportunity to better fulfil their potential. In this context, the Sindh Government is making efforts to improve access to quality education, especially for girls. JICA has been supporting the effort of the Sindh Government by upgrading 54 girls' primary schools into elementary schools in Rural Sindh. These schools were designed and built taking into account the damages caused by the 2010 flood. As a result, they sustained the 2022 floods without significant damages and many of them were used as shelters for Internally Displaced Persons. “Building Back Better (BBB)” is the key approach to post-disaster recovery to reduce vulnerability to future disasters and establish the environment that supports children's continuous learning.
