If you’d like to schedule a consultation, fill up the contact form on this page https://www.beckerplastics.com/. Hi, this is Dr. Kirk Lozada. I'm a facial plastic surgeon and rhinoplasty specialist at Penn Medicine Becker ENT. And this is two minute consults. Otoplasty surgery is very good for patients who feel like they have very big ears. Now this could either be that their ears are too far forward, or they're somewhat misshapen or uneven, more importantly. Patients sometimes wear their hair down to cover their ears, and they're simply just self conscious about what they look like and the size. Otoplasty is a very effective way to either change the shape or change the position of the ear so that the patients can feel more comfortable, and either wear their hair up or be more self confident about the shape of their ears. There's two common things that otoplasty tries to treat. Number one is typically patients have a little bit of a bigger ear because this fold right here, which is called the antihelical fold, and I'll show it on this side too, the antihelical fold, sometimes patients don't have that fold and so their ear can be propped out. And without that fold, their ear appears bigger and more forward. So that can be reshaped with otoplasty surgery using sutures. Secondarily, the second reason why people seek out otoplasty surgery is because this bowl of cartilage here, and here, is too big, it's too deep. I always tell patients, imagine a swimming pool, like this is a big swimming pool of cartilage. If that swimming pool is too deep, then there's too much cartilage that's pushing the ear forward off the back of the skull back here. And so we can also address the position, or how much cartilage there is there as well, and make sure that the shape and the size of the ears are pulled back in the correct position.
