When 532 of agriculture's best and brightest student leaders come together, the roar of excitement is almost deafening. From Nov. 1-4, Kansas City, Mo., was home to the 2012 AFA Leaders Conference. The student delegation represented 97 major and degree programs at 78 colleges and universities in 33 states. Such diversity led to industry and nation-wide discussions. However, the impact of these students went beyond the United States when they in partnership with Numana, Inc. packed 28,314 meals for the hungry in South Africa. Recognizing agriculture's challenges and opportunities, AFA's team of 25 student leaders planned programming to feed a passion for agriculture they believe transcends generations and leads to innovation. Throughout this four-day experience, 137 speakers and panelists addressed the students. Each session followed the theme "Follow Passion. Take Action.," challenging students to draw on their passion to move the industry forward. Delegates engaged in sessions and workshops that equipped them with skills for better communication, resource management and workforce transitions. Keynote sessions were delivered by Dr. Jay Lehr, Heartland Institute science director; Jon Petz, Bore No More; and John Hill, LinkedIn higher education evangelist. 2012 AFA Leader in Agriculture Award recipients Dr. Barry Flinchbaugh, Kansas State University, and Howard G. Buffett, Howard G. Buffett Foundation, also offered a challenge to attendees. Students had the opportunity to interact with industry professionals in many situations, including the AFA Opportunity Fair. This year's fair hosted 70 organizations ranging from agribusinesses to graduate schools and associations. Delegates were presented many opportunities including internships, full-time positions and study abroad opportunities. Thank you to the many partners and friends of AFA who made this experience possible.
