VUmc Research on Childhood Cancer celebrates 25th anniversary
VUmc Research on Childhood Cancer (VONK) sounds the gong in honor of their 25th anniversary. VONK has contributed to the increase in survival from childhood cancer from 60% to 75% in 2013. 'To cure more children with less side-effects', this is the main aim of the VUmc Pediatric Oncology Center. Doctors and researchers are looking for an improved treatment, one that will better suit the individual needs of each child. VONK focuses mainly on those patients who are not responsive to treatment with cytostatic drugs and radiation therapy. The enthusiastic and ambitious VONK staff is determined to contribute to further improvements in current treatments, allowing more children to be cured with fewer late effects.Professor of pediatric oncology and project manager of VONK, Gert-Jan Kaspers, sounds the gong.
