Mahesh Pathmakumara and Daminda Athauda have performed the sitar flute duet here. Peshala Manoj is accompanying the artists to maintain the rhythm with his tabla. This presentation is part of JollyGul Indian Classical Music & Dance Series to enhance the awareness and understanding of this tradition in our community and in our audience. The Charukeshi raag used in North Indian Music is a raag that originated from the Charukeshi Mela, the 26th "Melakartha" of Carnatic music. Charukesi raag is known to incite feelings of compassion and devotion in the listener. Melakartha is a collection of fundamental musical scales in Carnatic music. The swaras (Notes) “Dhaivat” and “Nishad” are “Komal” (Flat) and the other swaras (Notes) are “Shuddh” (Natural) and used in this Charukeshi raag. In this raag all 7 Notes (swaras) are used in ascending and descending. According to North Indian music system, this raga is a combination of Bilawal and Bhairavi ragas. In this raga, it is common to use the Notes (Swaras) combination of "Ri Ga Ma Ni Dha Pa". First there is a short Aalap of Raag Charukeshi then a "Madhya Laya" (medium composition) on the Ada Chau Taal then a "Drut Laya" (fast tempo) Teen Taal and finally a "Jhala" playing based on Raag Charukeshi. Jhala in Hindustani instrumental music denotes the fast-paced conclusion of classical compositions or raga. It is often characterized by the overwhelming of the melodic component by the rhythmic component. Daminda is a very talented flute player in Sri Lanka.
