The 193rd video of my train spotting adventures. ----- This video has us almost crossing the route of the soon-to-be-reopened Varsity Line (as East West Rail or EWR), from Oxford in the west to the "new city" of Milton Keynes, and its namesake railway station, Milton Keynes Central. A large 7-platform regional intercity station, it came into existence not long after its namesake town (regarded as at least a proto-city nowadays) of Milton Keynes. Under the "New Towns Act 1946" and subsequent acts, undertaken to move struggling families and peoples from bombed-out houses in London following the Second World War, Milton Keynes came about in a third wave of these acts, incorporating other settlements nearby such as Wolverton and Bletchley. - A station did not exist in the business-heavy centre of Milton Keynes once the broader new town area was established, with Bletchley being the biggest station nearby, with intercity trains calling there up until the opening of this new station. In the cash-strapped days of the 1960s & 70s, British Rail (BR) were reluctant at first to commission a new station, but came around after a cost sharing initiative was established. After designs of the local offices, buildings and station itself were submitted in 1979, the station officially opened on the 14th May 1982, with a ceremonial opening by then-Prince of Wales Charles 3 days later. This opening caused a subsequent downgrading of Bletchley station, with InterCity BR services (nowadays Avanti West Coast) moving to the new Milton Keynes Central station. - Initially the station had 5 platforms, situated on the busy southern "throat" of the West Coast Mainline between London Euston and Rugby (the latter being the dividing junction for the Trent Valley route or the Birmingham route). With an understanding of the need to improve services through the station, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced upgrades in 2006. The first upgrade was the creation of a down fast line with Platform 6 opening, which allowed the existing Platform 5 to be used for stopping express trains, and generally more capacity for intercity & regional units to come and go. The second was adding the bay Platform 2A, originally for terminating trains to/from Bedford on the Marston Vale Line from north of Bletchley, but this was scrapped and now is set to be used by future EWR services. Platform 1 is now a through platform for one of the relief lines, and main Platform 2 is a sectioned line primarily for terminating services. These works were finished in December 2008. - Currently, services consist of intercity Avanti West Coast services to/from London Euston towards Birmingham, Manchester, and other north England and Scottish locations, with regional and commuter services ran by London Northwestern Railway. In the future, it's planned (using the aforementioned Platform 2A) that EWR services will run to/from Milton Keynes to/from Oxford, and potentially Aylesbury too, via the rebuilt Varsity Line from Bletchley. A target date of 2025 is the current understanding, but this could still vary. ----- Filmed on the: West Coast Mainline ----- Services seen: AWC) Services towards Watford Junction, London Euston, Rugby, Coventry, Birmingham International, Birmingham New Street, Wolverhampton, Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent, Macclesfield, Stockport, Manchester Piccadilly, Stafford, Crewe, and onwards to Liverpool, Blackpool, Carlisle, and Scotland (Glasgow/Edinburgh). - LNR) Services towards Bletchley, Watford Junction, London Euston, Wolverton, Northampton, Rugby, Coventry, Birmingham International, Birmingham New Street, Nuneaton, Atherstone, Polesworth, Tamworth, Lichfield Trent Valley, Rugeley Trent Valley, Stafford, and Crewe. ----- Trains seen: AWC) Class 390 Pendolino, Class 221 Super Voyager, Class 805 (test) LNR) Class 350 Desiro, Class 319 (empty move) CR) Class 168 Clubman (empty move) FL) Class 66, Class 70, Class 90 DB) Class 66 GBRf) Class 66 DRS) Class 66 RA) Class 43 HST MR) Class 777 (empty move) c2c) Class 720 Aventra (test) ----- Please leave a like, comment or even subscribe if you enjoy my content.
