Sanchar Saathi is the mobile version of the government’s CEIR portal launched to block lost or stolen phones and stop circulation of devices with fake or duplicate IMEI. Citizens can file complaints to block devices nationwide within minutes and check if a second-hand phone is legal through the Know Your Mobile feature. The app brings all these services under one roof instead of visiting the portal. The app seeks access to camera, microphone, precise location, contacts, storage, photos and ability to read phone state and IMEI. While many banking and messaging apps also ask for several permissions, Sanchar Saathi demands more than popular apps like Truecaller. Critics question why an app meant only for blocking lost phones needs camera and microphone access at all. We'll talk to experts.
