His Wife - Genesis 20:1-18

In Genesis 20 we step into a scene that feels uncomfortably familiar. After the devastating account of Lot’s failure, we might expect better from Abraham. Instead, we find fear, half truths, and a marriage placed in jeopardy. Abraham journeys to Gerar and once again calls Sarah his sister. At nearly ninety years old, her beauty still draws the attention of King Abimelech. Fear grips Abraham’s heart. He assumes the worst. He imagines there is no fear of God in that land. So he deceives to survive. Sarah goes along with it. And the covenant family, chosen to represent the living God, falters. Yet before sin can run its course, the Lord intervenes. In a dream, God warns Abimelech and protects Sarah. The pagan king trembles. He restores her with gifts and honor. Ironically, the man outside the covenant shows more fear of God than the prophet within it. This chapter reminds us that even the faithful stumble. Even the chosen can fall short. But it also reveals a greater truth. God is faithful when His people are not. Abraham did not need to lie to preserve the promise. The Lord was fully able to guard what He had ordained. We are no different. Fear tempts us to manipulate outcomes. But our security is not found in deception. It is found in Christ Jesus our Lord.
