Kathakali, the 17th century classical dance-theatre of Kerala, is an amazing amalgam of dance, drama, music, intriguing facial make-up and costuming. The plays staged in Kathakali are composed from the great Indian Epics. Santhanagopalam penned by Mandavappally Ittiraricha Menon is one of the most popular plays in Kathakali which narrates the anguish of a Brahmin caused by the death of his nine children one after the other. At the end of the play, Arjuna, the mighty Pandava Warrior and Lord Krishna retrieve the children from the abode of Lord Vishnu. Seeing all his children including the last one whom Arjuna had failed to protect, the Brahmin’s joy knows no bounds. He blesses both Arjuna and Krishna. Scene I : Lord Krishna and Arjuna Arjuna, the third of the Pandavas, arrives at the Dwaraka much to the delight of Lord Krishna. Krishna receives him warmly and inquires about the wellbeing of the rest of the Pandavas, their wife Draupadi and his wife Subhadra. The Lord tells Arjuna that human-life is ephemeral in the sense that it is like the glowing droplet at the center of the petals of a lotus flower and hence cordial coexistence alone is happiness. Arjuna replies that he and all the others are servants of the Lord so that there is no cause for sorrow. Everyone worships the Lord’s feet and anticipates the nectar of his mercy. Thereafter both Krishna and Arjuna exchange pleasantries. Arjuna briefly recollects the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Scene II: Krishna, Arjuna & the Brahmin A Brahmin enters Dwaraka and proceeds towards Lord Krishna carrying his still-born child and lamenting his tragic fate. He comes from a distance and finally walks up to Krishna. He repeatedly tries in vain to bring the attention of Krishna to the dead-child. Krishna sits there nonchalantly much to the consternation of the Brahmin. A visibly surprised and shocked Arjuna intervenes, looks at the child and tries to console the Brahmin. At that moment, Krishna takes leave. In the following conversation between Arjuna and the Brahmin, the former assures the latter that he would safeguard the next child. Arjuna boasts of his credentials in front of the Brahmin who refuses to be convinced easily. He demands Arjuna to execute oaths for protection of the child in the names of Dharmaputhra, his eldest brother, Lord Indra, his father and Lord Krishna. Reluctantly Arjuna executes all the oaths. The Brahmin returns home happily. Scene III: Brahmin & his wife On his return, a visibly excited Brahmin tells his wife about his unexpected meeting with Ajruna who has promised to protect their next child without fail. In case Arjuna fails in his mission he would sacrifice his life in the holy fire. The wife of the Brahmin tells her husband that even the smartest persons cannot avert his/her destiny. We have to experience ourselves both joy and sorrow bestowed by life to us. The Brahmin consoles his wife that Arjuna would redress their sorrow since Krishna will not forsake the ‘Pandava’ who took a drastic pledge.
