Dr Nathan Kenny (Te Ātiawa, Ngāi Tahu) from the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Otago will be discussing Embedding Principles of Partnership and Māori Data Sovereignty in Genomic Research. Dr Kenny’s research is centred on a Rutherford Discovery Fellowship, looking at the molecular mechanisms underlying resilience to climate change in the kuku (the green-lipped mussel, Perna canaliculus, also known as the kūtai). He works at the intersection of comparative genomics, phylogenetics and evolutionary developmental biology in a range of invertebrate species. Nathan completed his undergraduate training at the University of Otago and received his PhD in Zoology from the University of Oxford in 2014. He did postdoctoral training at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and received a Marie Curie Fellowship in 2017 to conduct research at the Natural History Museum in London, before moving to Oxford Brookes University in the UK. Nathan returned to the University of Otago as a lecturer in 2021. Nathan was a project lead on two Genomics Aotearoa Indigenous Genomics Platform projects in collaboration with Wakatū Incorporation: Nā Tō Rourou, Nā Taku Rourou Sharing the Benefits of Genomics, exploring the genomic basis for important traits of high-value marine species, while ensuring the research benefits are owned by the appropriate individuals, communities or institutions Phylogenetic and Transcriptomic Analysis of Kawakawa for Rongoā and Kaitiakitanga which used a transcriptomic approach to understand kawakawa diversity, within a tikanga-informed framework for sample acquisition, processing, data sovereignty and benefitsharing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you would be interested in signing up to our mailing list to get reminders for this seminar, hear about future seminars and training opportunities, and to receive our newsletter, there is a signup link at the bottom of our website. https://www.genomics-aotearoa.org.nz/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Intro/Outro Music: Liquid Logo Intro Music by Anvish Parker (Royalty Free) https://www.avnishparker.com/logo-int...
