Born on March 22, 1980, Teresa Halbach was the youngest of five siblings. She dreamed of becoming a National Geographic photographer, studied photography, and worked freelance for AutoTrader magazine. However, her career took a tragic turn when her last job brought her to Steven Avery, a man with a troubled past. Avery had previously been exonerated after serving 18 years for a crime he didn’t commit, only to be implicated in Teresa’s murder in 2005 after her remains were found on his property. The evidence included Teresa's blood in her SUV and her car keys in Avery’s room. Avery claimed he was being framed by police. Complicating the case was his nephew, Brendan Dassey, who, without a lawyer or guardian, confessed to assisting Avery but later recanted, claiming coercion. Both Avery and Dassey received life sentences, sparking controversy. Years later, lawyer Kathleen Zellner took Avery’s case, uncovering new leads: evidence of tampering, possible alternative suspects, and a witness who saw Brendan’s brother, Bobby, near Teresa’s SUV. Zellner has argued that Avery was framed, with ongoing appeals challenging the original evidence.
