Defi Wind 2025 - practice race (20250528).

Gruissan – Defi Wind. Gear: Starboard iSonic 63 (2025) Severne MACH7 6.5 Chopper DW 34cm fin After having had three good days of sailing (any time while the kites or wings weren’t racing), day 4 finished with a practice race, late in the afternoon. We had a Surfcenter “Ultimate Experience” moment on the beach and then it was time to race! A bit of confusion over the start time, with it initially to be at 6pm, so I along with a lot of other sailors were out there from around 5:45 getting ready to start out on the water. However, the race boat was a little late and then went in near the shore and let the people there know the start had been postponed to 6:30pm. This meant I ended up sailing back and forth in pretty gusty winds with a lot of other sailors for about 45 minutes not knowing when the race was to start. Then, suddenly, the race boat left the beach did a big arc and ran up the start line in true Defi style! I had been in a pretty good position, but without much wind soon got overtaken and couldn’t get on the plane. I think a lot of the sailors now on the plane and engulfing me had come from around the corner (where you rig) and had started there? Then there were all the sailors starting on the beach just above the start line. Who were now also on the water, and up wind. Luckily, I got going and was off, with a lot of sailors mow well in front and some still behind. The wind was probably the gustiest it had been since arriving, with 5-25 knots and lots of chop from everyone out on the water. With the gear I had, I kept coming off the plane, along with a lot of sailors around me. After a while, the top foilers were heading back, so I could see them, and then the top fin sailors, with Nico, Mateo and I think Jordy all passing by quite close to where I was (languishing)! The course had been shortened to half the length and with just one lap, and just before the rounding marks I got some wind and, despite coming off the plane at the marks, I got going again reasonably quickly and then had probably my longest run on the plane and with a good gust that allowed me to point up and almost pass a large group, before I too got stuck in the lull that they were in! The wind angle changed a bit after that and a group of us were all heading well down below the finish line. I sailed past the finish before gybing to then point back up wind to see if I could officially make the the finish line. Thought I'd gone far enough, sailing back toward other sailors who were also trying to make the finish line, but after gybing again, I still couldn't point high enough and missed it again! Another gybe, more pointing then gybed again and finally got to make it through the finish line on the plane (and battling to overtake the few sailors around me – in true Defi style). Then had to make it back to the beach! All pretty exhausting, and with the race being unofficial, no placings were taken, but fantastic to have that experience! I need to say that the Surfcenter Team and the coaches were FANTASTIC, and I’d highly recommend going through them to get some tips and coaching, and gear if you need it! Disclaimer - this video doesn't show all of the time I was off the plane, and I’d say I spent more time off the plane than on, but hopefully it gives a feel for the conditions! I'll put some video together of the prior three days of sailing as soon as i get a chance.
