Quadrantectomy surgery, also known as a segmental mastectomy, is a type of breast-conserving surgery for breast cancer. It involves removing: 1. The tumor 2. The surrounding breast tissue (approximately 1/4 of the breast) 3. The underlying muscle and fascia 4. The adjacent lymph nodes (if necessary) The goal of quadrantectomy is to remove the cancerous tissue while preserving as much of the breast as possible. Indications: 1. Unifocal breast cancer (cancer in one area of the breast) 2. Tumor size less Than 2 cm 3. Tumor location in the outer upper quadrant (away from the nipple-areola complex) Benefits: 1. Breast conservation 2. Reduced scarring compared to mastectomy 3. Improved cosmetic outcome 4. Reduced risk of lymphedema Risks and Side Effects: 1. Bleeding or hematoma 2. Infection 3. Seroma (fluid accumulation) 4. Asymmetry or changes in breast shape 5. Numbness or loss of sensation Quadrantectomy is often followed by radiation therapy to ensure complete removal of cancer cells. This procedure is a suitable option for selected patients with early-stage breast cancer, and patients should discuss their individual circumstances with a breast surgeon or oncologist. #Quadrantectomy
