Coping With Long COVID tells the story of five patients suffering from ongoing conditions after initially being infected with the COVID-19 virus. Each has a particular set of symptoms and wide-range of continuing health problems. For the United States, the national emergency declared because of the COVID-19 epidemic ended in May 2023, three years after it was first announced. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1.13 million people have died from Covid-19 in the country, and approximately one in five COVID-19 patients still have Long COVID. For them, the virus continues to set the tone of their daily lives, and uncertainty lingers as scientists and doctors struggle to understand Long COVID or even agree on a standard treatment. They are the forgotten victims the pandemic left behind and yet manage to find the hope and strength needed to carry on.
