Ovech is a medieval fortress located east of today's town of Provadia. It is located on a plateau above the city, bearing the name "Kaleto". The fortress was built by the Romans and functioned from the 4th century to the beginning of the 7th century, after which it was inactive for nearly a century. Its habitation started again from the 11th century and ended at the end of the 17th century. However, before the foundation of the fortress, a Thracian presence was also proven. However, it experienced its greatest flourishing during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The Byzantines called the fortress Provat or Provaton, the Bulgarians - Ovech, and the Turks - Tash Hisar (stone fortress).
