The St. Louis-South Western (SSW), known as Cotton Belt, received ten (10) EMD GP30 units in 1963, distinct for their SP signal light package, tripod-mount bell above the conductor’s side number board, and yellow handrails. Initially assigned to demanding roles like the “Blue Streak” trains, these units were renumbered to SSW 5000-5009 in 1965 as part of a systemwide re-numbering. Over time, as newer locomotives joined the fleet, the GP30s were gradually relegated to lesser roles and were among the first to be stored during traffic downturns. By 1986, all units were retired, but many were acquired secondhand for Burlington Northern’s rebuild program, where they continue to serve with BNSF Railway. SSW 5006 was preserved at the Arkansas Railroad Museum, serving as a tribute to Cotton Belt's legacy.
