Twelve years ago, the same year she won an Academy Award, Lupita Nyong’o was diagnosed with uterine fibroids. While celebrating career highs, she was privately navigating heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, and limited treatment options: surgery or living with the pain. Today, fibroids account for nearly 30% of hysterectomies, with Black women facing earlier onset, more severe symptoms, and three times the rate of hysterectomies compared to white women. Now, Lupita is speaking out. Through the Make Fibroids Count campaign, launched with the Foundation for Women’s Health via GoFundMe, she’s advocating for more research and less invasive treatments — and calling for greater equity in women’s health.
