July 2025 Railfanning the NS Pittsburgh Line, Day 2 - Altoona to Cassandra

Waking up to an early alarm we kicked off our first full day trackside of the Ziegler Crew Altoona trip on the NS Pittsburgh Line. The day's travels would take us to Altoona, Cresson, Gallitzin and Lilly, with visits including the Juniata Shops, the Brickyard, the Rt.53 Bridge, Gallitzin Tunnels and AR Tower. We'd also spend the nightcap at the Brickyard catching trains working up/down the east slope. Though we did catch a good amount of trains throughout the day, some of the highlights included HI10 on the Cove Secondary, C48 making a lite engine run to South Fork, and a handful of ACU (and even the ACe pair) helpers. We also would catch a couple NS heritage units and a 994 engine move to JBS from Conway. There were even a handful of empty coal trains to be seen, despite an absence of loads, due to the trip timing out with the miners' time off.
