Updated the DIY SUPATRAC Clone by reversing the pivot arrangement so its on the arm thrustbox rather than the mounting column. Also tidied up the lifter. The SALVATION turntable is suspended on O-rings. The platter is directly rotated by drive wheel attached to the motor. Vibrations reaching the record surface are stopped by the foam motor pod housing the motor, and the thick foam pad/acrylic cones the record sits on. The spindle is also isolated from the original spindle by a foam sleeve. After many DIY speaker trials with varying degrees of success, I settled on the commercial Focal Shape Twin Active Studio Monitors which use passive radiators rather than a reflex port for bass. These are easier to integrate with the UM18 clamshell subs. The Twins bass is shelved & 60hz, and the subs extend down to 20hz. The big advantage of not using a box is there is no resonance or interference with room modes. Disadvantage is its not efficient, so need 4 of the suckers & lots of watts! Subs are driven by a pair of Behringer NX600D's. The sound of this system might not suit everyone. It is rather upfront, although not fatiguing. The passive bass radiators means the upper bass slams/stops/starts better than any system I have previously had. This is aided by the underhung tonearm, which gives more slam than the offset SupaTrac. The bass is also rich in detail & texture. I listen to a lot of electronic music which makes no sense without that bottom octave!
