Welcome to When They Dared to Be Powerful, a podcast series celebrating the legacy of Black women in librarianship. This series centers the contributing authors—and the extraordinary librarians—featured in The Legacy of Black Women in Librarianship, edited by Dr. Nicole A. Cooke. Through their stories, we honor the brilliance, resilience, and leadership of Black women who have shaped—and continue to shape—the profession. Hosted by Dr. Cearra Harris, each episode uplifts the voices behind this important work, exploring their scholarship, their contributions to librarianship, and the lasting impact of the women whose legacies they preserve. In today’s episode, Dr. Harris had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. LaKeshia Darden, who highlights the legacy of Eliza Atkins Gleason in her chapter of The Legacy of Black Women in Librarianship. Dr. LaKeshia Darden (she/her) is the Director of Library Services at St. Philip’s College in San Antonio, Texas, where she provides strategic leadership for academic library services, student success initiatives, and campus-wide engagement. Prior to entering librarianship, Dr. Darden spent eight years as a public-school educator—an experience that continues to shape her deep commitment to teaching, equity, and lifelong learning. Dr. Darden is also a dedicated and longstanding leader within the American Library Association. Her service includes roles such as Chair of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Jury and current membership in the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Round Table. She has served as a Councilor-at-Large on ALA Council and is actively involved in the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, EMEIRT, ALSC, and YALSA. She previously served on the BCALA Executive Board and currently serves on BCALA’s Services to Children of African Descent Committee. In this conversation, we discuss Dr. Darden’s contribution to The Legacy of Black Women in Librarianship and reflect on the enduring impact of Eliza Atkins Gleason—a trailblazer whose work laid foundational ground for generations to come.
