After deep penance, Rishi Mrikanda was blessed with a son, whom he named Markandeya. However, astrologers predicted that the child was destined to have a short life, with a lifespan of only 12 years. As Markandeya grew old enough to understand and speak, his father revealed the truth about his short lifespan. He also imparted to him a sacred mantra dedicated to Lord Shiva, emphasizing that Shiva alone could liberate him from the fear of death. The young Markandeya then devoted himself entirely to Shiva's worship, meditating in a Shiva temple with unwavering focus. When the fated day of Markandeya's death arrived, his parents also joined him in the temple for meditation. As the time approached, Yama's emissaries came to take the boy's soul but were unable to approach him due to the power of the mantra. Frustrated, they returned to Yama and narrated the incident. Yama himself then came to claim Markandeya. With his fiery eyes, fearsome form, buffalo mount, and noose in hand, he struck terror in the young boy's heart. Terrified, Markandeya embraced the Shiva Linga and began to cry out for Shiva's protection. At that moment, Lord Shiva appeared in his divine form, furious at Yama's audacity. He rebuked Yama, saying, "How dare you think of giving the death penalty to a devotee under my protection?" Yama, humbled, replied, "O Lord, I seek forgiveness. I am merely carrying out the duties assigned to me by the Creator, delivering death according to karmic law." Shiva declared, "I have granted this child the boon of immortality. He is now beyond death." Hearing these words from Lord Shiva, Yama bowed in reverence, sought forgiveness, and departed. This story is in the Markandeya Purana. ॐ तत् सत् Like Share Subscribe ____________________________________________________________________________ Mantra Mandir Sangraha Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mantramandi...
