On this week’s episode of The Screen Podcast, the team checks in on the film awards race while FilmNation’s Glen Basner shares his insights ahead of the American Film Market (AFM). First, Screen contributing editor Wendy Mitchell, editor Matt Mueller and deputy editor Louise Tutt are joined by awards and box office editor Charles Gant to assess the awards race so far. They debate whether big studio films are at a disadvantage, how Wicked: For Good could pull off a Lord Of the Rings: The Return Of The King and if Neon can take all five spots for best international feature. Then they take a look at the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards (Bifas) which were heavily male-skewed this year. “We could definitely see it coming as these were the films that were recognised and chosen for Cannes,” says Louise. “But for me, there were some really good female-directed films and female-orientated narratives that were overlooked.” Finally, Screen’s Americas editor Jeremy Kay is joined by FilmNation Entertainment CEO Glen Basner ahead of the AFM. The duo discuss measuring the success of a theatrical deal, why the South Asia market is proving tricky, and whether Toronto’s new market is really adding value. “There is not a need for more than the three markets that we've had. There's certainly not another need to have another market in the fall,” says Glen. “And the challenge that it's going to face is, it happens in early September, which means that we all have to be packaging and getting people to make decisions in August for us to be able to come with new titles.” The Screen Podcast is produced and hosted by Wendy Mitchell and edited by Ellie Calnan.
