On this trip, my son and I took our little jon boat down Florida’s Peace River for a full day of fossil hunting. The original plan was to explore a small creek I had scouted ahead of time—but extremely low water levels forced us to change plans and adapt. Instead, we spent the day digging and searching gravel bars along the river, and it turned out to be an great decision. We found a pile of fossils, including: Shark teeth from lemon, tiger, sand tiger, and snaggletooth sharks Megalodon tooth fragments Incredible Ice Age fossils, including deer antler, turtle shell, horse teeth, crocodile and alligator teeth A predator molar And the find of the day — a large chunk of mastodon tooth Beyond the amazing finds, I also share practical tips and advice for anyone who wants to start fossil hunting on the Peace River but doesn’t know where to begin—from reading the river, essential equipment, to identifying productive gravel bars, to what to look for once you start digging. Most importantly, it was just an awesome day on the river with my son—making memories and uncovering pieces of Florida’s ancient past.
