Why it started ? Two interconnected issues are central to this protest. First, the delay in election notification for the 91 student seats in the PU Senate — students allege that the notification and polling dates have been unfairly withheld for months, affecting student representation and leadership in key university decisions. Second, the Centre’s proposal to restructure the university’s governance system has caused widespread concern. The move, which sought to modify how decision-making bodies like the Senate and Syndicate operate, was viewed by many as an attempt to centralise power, dilute Punjab’s educational autonomy, and control university finances, including the Senate leadership fund. Though the notification was later withdrawn, the tension has remained. ** Punjab and Sikh Context ** The fact that Sikh organisations and Punjabi student unions are part of the protest underscores that for many in Punjab, this issue is not merely administrative but deeply tied to identity, autonomy, and regional pride. Punjab has a long history of movements for greater regional rights — from the Punjabi Suba Movement to modern educational autonomy demands. Therefore, the idea of “preserving Punjab’s claim” over Panjab University and Chandigarh resonates strongly among the people. The protest also highlights larger questions about education accessibility, from schooling to online colleges and further education. Students argue that without proper representation and transparency, even initiatives for digital learning and online education lose credibility.
