A person was taken into custody Thursday night during a protest held in Kalamazoo against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS), though the department told News Channel 3 that the individual does not appear to have been part of the demonstration itself. Video shared with our station by a protester shows KDPS officers on bicycles chasing after and arresting a person near City Hall, as protesters nearby shout at them, and the officers use their bicycles as a blockade. According to KDPS, the person was arrested for obstructing the road and for resisting and obstructing police after they had made contact. The incident occurred during what KDPS described as an otherwise peaceful protest. Police told News Channel 3 the individual taken into custody does not appear to have been connected to the larger group that was protesting, but the incident is still under investigation. The protest was organized by partners of Southwest Michigan Coalition, including the Kalamazoo Immigrant Solidarity Coalition, Black Lives Matter, Kalamazoo Nonviolent Opponents of War, the Kalamazoo Democratic Party, the Southwest Michigan Democratic Socialists of America, and Indivisible of Greater Kalamazoo (IGK). IGK is an organization that began about a year ago and has grown from 12 to about 3,500 members, according to its leaders. IGK leaders also informed News Channel 3 that their volunteers receive recurring de-escalation training and that when the arrest happened, they worked to calm the crowd and restore order in what had become an emotionally charged moment. Organizers said they are still working to determine whether the person arrested was associated with the protest and to better understand what led up to the incident. Throughout the evening protest, the large group marched through downtown Kalamazoo. An estimated 300 to 400 people attended, according to organizers, with participants of varying ages and backgrounds. Many protesters told News Channel 3 they were motivated by concerns about immigration enforcement, particularly the recent killing of a woman in Minnesota, as well as broader concerns of safety and equality under the Trump administration. One protester, Bob, who said he is in his late 70s and served in Vietnam, told us he attended the protest on behalf of his family. “I have a mixed race family and a lot of what’s going on right now, in my opinion, is just downright racist,” he said. “I have to stand up. I have to do what I can for them.” Others expressed fear and uncertainty, saying they felt compelled to speak out even though the events they are concerned about did not happen locally. “It doesn’t matter that it didn’t happen here,” one protester said. “If it happens anywhere, it can happen everywhere.” Read: https://wwmt.com/news/local/person-ar... _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: WWMT on Facebook: / wwmtnews WWMT on Twitter: / wwmtnews Subscribe to WWMT on YouTube: / @wwmtnews WWMT Daily News Digest: • WWMT-TV Daily Digest For more information, visit https://www.wwmt.com/ Have a news tip?
