In this video, imam John Ederer discusses the origins and growth of the Hizmet movement, which is also known as the Nur movement. The movement was founded by Fethullah Gulen, who was influenced by the teachings of Saeed Nursi. Gulen was inspired by revivalist movements like the Muslim Brotherhood and Mawdudi's Islamic movement, but he felt they were too focused on political empowerment rather than civilizational growth. The Hizmet movement established many foundations and institutions, including schools and media outlets, in Turkey and around the globe. We also discuss the relationship between Gulen and Erdogan, and the crackdown on the Welfare Party and other Islamic movements in Turkey. Imam John Ederer also discusses the history that shaped recent Islamic work that has reached the global stage. In the early 20th century, the Ottoman Empire was in decline, and Islam had little influence on institutions. A young Kurdish intellectual named Saeed Nursi proposed integrating religious and secular sciences to modernize the Ottomans, but was rejected by the Sultan. After the establishment of the secular Turkish state, Nursi continued his teachings, emphasizing that science and religion are natural partners. His writings, known as the Epistles of Light, became highly influential, and he was seen as the 'unique wonder of our age' by his students and contemporaries. #IslamicHistory #OttomanEmpire #SaeedNursi #IslamicModernization #SecularismvIslamicIdentity #NurMovement #HizmetMovement #FethullahGulen #SaeedNursi #MuslimBrotherhood #Mawdudi #BadiAlZaman #WelfareParty #erdoğan
