South Africa’s social safety net is full of holes; millions are still trapped in poverty, hunger is rising, and too many people are excluded. This. Isn’t. Working. That’s why we’re calling for Universal Basic Income (UBI): No one left behind. A system that lifts everyone up. In this Q&A, Siyanda Baduza breaks down what UBI really means: A guarantee: a monthly income for every working-age adult, no conditions, no red tape. Why now: unemployment sits at 42.9%, and the only support for working-age adults, the SRD grant, is far too low (R370) and excludes many. Not dependency, but dignity: UBI gives people the security to seek work, study, care for family, or start small businesses. Affordable and smart: money spent on UBI flows back into the economy, creating jobs and boosting growth. For our future: UBI supports women, children, and caregivers, lifting families out of poverty and building stronger generations ahead. As Siyanda puts it: “UBI isn’t charity. It’s economic justice. It’s a South Africa that works, for everyone.” Universal Basic Income: For all. Without exception.
