332 - Why is it colder in higher elevations? We’ve always been told that hot air rises. But why is it that it gets colder the higher in elevation that you go? The reason for this that the higher in the atmosphere that you go, the less dense the air is. Air pressure is decreased as you increase in altitude. The reason for this is that there are less molecules in the air. This also means that temperature decreases because heat requires that molecules bump up against each other. If there are less molecules, then there is less bumping up against each other, and less heat. So that’s why it’s colder the higher you go. Wow! Science is so amazing.
