Amiens is a French city, located in the department of the Somme and the region of Hauts-de-France (formerly Picardy region). Its inhabitants are called the Amiénois and the Amiénoises. The 300 hectares of water gardens of Amiens have earned it the name of Venice of the North. In the past, they were just market gardening. Leeks, cabbages and carrots were grown there for the Amiens. Today there are only a handful of hortillions to cultivate the black and fertile soil of Hortillonnages and to make it their profession. Every Saturday, they sell their products at the water market in the Saint-Leu district. The opportunity to get good fresh vegetables to prepare the famous Hortillonnages soup. Amiens est une ville française, située dans le département de la Somme et la région des Hauts-de-France (anciennement Région Picardie). Ses habitants sont appelés les Amiénois et les Amiénoises. Les 300 hectares de jardins sur l’eau d’Amiens lui ont valu le nom de Venise du Nord. Autrefois, ils n’étaient que maraîchages. On y cultivait poireaux, choux et carottes pour les Amiénois. Aujourd’hui ils ne sont plus qu’une poignée d’hortillons à cultiver la terre noire et fertile des Hortillonnages et à en faire leur métier. Chaque samedi, ils vendent leurs produits lors du marché sur l’eau dans le quartier Saint-Leu. L'occasion de se procurer de bons légumes frais pour préparer la célèbre soupe des Hortillonnages.
