Title: How to Manage a Pig During Giving Birth (Farrowing) Welcome to SINAPI ANIMAL FARM series. Today, we're learning how to properly manage a sow/Gilt during farrowing; — the process of giving birth. This is a critical time that requires care, observation, and calm handling. 1: Preparation Before Farrowing. Before farrowing begins, prepare a clean, disinfected farrowing pen. Provide dry bedding — such as straw or wood shavings and make sure the area is well-ventilated. ✅ Clean and disinfect pen ✅ Provide clean water and feed ✅ Add bedding ✅ Install heat lamp for piglets if affordable ( 32–35°C) 2: Signs of Approaching Labor "Watch for signs of labor. A sow about to farrow will often: ✅ Start nesting ✅ Lose appetite ✅ Have a swollen, milk-producing udder ✅ Lie down more often ✅ Show restlessness" 3: Farrowing Begins Farrowing usually begins with clear fluid discharge, followed by piglets born one by one. Labor typically lasts between 2 to 4 hours but at some scenarios can be up to 8 hours. Piglets are usually born every 15–30 minutes. 4: Assisting the Sow/Gilt Stay close, but keep a calm, quiet environment. Most sows farrow naturally. However, assist if need be i.e: ✅ Over 45 minutes passing between piglets ✅ A piglet is stuck or coming out backward ✅ The sow is exhausted and stops pushing Always wash your hands and wear gloves before assisting. Use clean lubricant and be gentle to avoid injury. 5: Caring for the Newborn Piglets After birth, quickly wipe each piglet dry with a clean towel to stimulate breathing. Place them under the heat lamp if available to keep warm. Ensure they find the udder and start suckling within 30 minutes. 6: Aftercare for Sow and Piglets Once farrowing is complete, check the sow for retained piglets or afterbirth. Give her clean water and food. Monitor both sow and piglets for the next 24–48 hours. ✅ Check for retained piglets ✅ Provide clean feed and water ✅ Monitor for fever or infection ✅ Ensure all piglets nurse and stay warm With good care and calm management, farrowing can go smoothly for both the sow and her piglets. A little preparation and attention make a big difference. Want more tips? Subscribe and follow us for more farming guides.
