Is this the END? Let's talk Burn Out Grab My GO TO QUAD CORTEX PRESET: https://www.etsy.com/listing/15086942... How many of you have set a a major goal for yourself? Something that you knew would take years, maybe even your whole life to fulfill? Well for me, that was making a career out of music. I wanted to play guitar, tour in bands, see the world. And today I’m here in Singapore with Weezer, after having just played 3 shows in Australia, one of them a stadium show with Kiss. I’m doing the thing. Sure, I’m running playback on this tour, but it still counts. I’ve gotten to play guitar in almost every state now, Canada, UK, and Germany. I achieved what I thought was my dream career, and let me tell you: it doesn’t feel like how I thought it would. First off, if you don’t know anything about me, which I think most of you probably don’t know much, I was a little bit of a nerd in high school. I took 12 ap classes, had a 4.75 GPA, I probably could’ve at least attempted some pretty difficult majors but no. I wanted to do music. I wanted to be in a band like switchfoot and play guitar for a living. And despite what my parents and professors tried to warn me about, I got a music industry degree from USC and then had to figure it out. It’s been 8 years since I graduated from college and 6 years of incorporating touring into the repertoire of work I do, and let me tell you, I feel so beaten down from the grind. Music is 90 percent a job to me, and I have to admit that my inspiration to play, heck, even listen to music is almost entirely gone. When I drive, it’s in silence or I’ll listen to a football or Star Wars podcast. I don’t go to shows unless it’s someone my wife wants to see. I can’t remember the last time I learned a song just for fun. if I’m not getting paid to learn it, I don’t pick up my guitar. Heck, once I get back from this run, that’ll be two weeks without playing guitar. I think that’s the longest I’ve gone since I first started playing freshman year of high school. I know two weeks isn’t a long time, but that feels really long to me. Anyway, it’s bittersweet. I’m sad that my joy and desire to play guitar and create with the instrument is almost zero, and has been for most of this year and truthfully, last year. But, I also feel kind of indifferent about it. But my guess is many of you whether you do this professionally or not have also felt burnt out with music at some point. Heck, even Mateus Asato had to take a break. It’s absolutely ok to feel burnt out and take a break. The difference for me is, since this music thing pays the bills, I feel a little trapped right now. I actually applied to over 100 jobs and only got two interviews. I guess being a music director, playback engineer, and a guitarist doesn’t mean crap to an HR rep. I’m a very competent human and a fast learner. Give me a chance. Or you know, maybe there’s a reason God is keeping me on the music journey right now. I guess now, I’ll just keep praying, keep playing, and maybe even keep applying. If there’s one thing I am, it’s determined, so I’m gonna beat this funk and get out of it. Whether I come out with even more fervor for music or not, I’m gonna keep moving and keep trying. That’s all I can do.
