(4 Oct 1998) Russian/Nat Demonstrators waving Soviet-era flags marched through Moscow on Saturday to mark the fifth anniversary of a bloody clash between government forces and opposition politicians. Five years ago troops fired on the Russian White House where renegade communist politicians had holed themselves up. The 1993 events were viewed as the final showdown between Russia's communists and the reform government of current President Boris Yeltsin. Thousands of supporters turned out with red banners and Soviet flags to mark the event which left hundreds dead and Russia in a state of turmoil. The events of October 3-4, 1993 were triggered by President Boris Yeltsin's decision to dissolve Russia's hard-line, Soviet-era parliament, which had continuously tried to block his free-market reforms. The politicians refused to disband and barricaded themselves in the White House, then Russia's parliament building. Yeltsin called in troops and tanks and pounded parliament into submission. About 200 people died in street violence that erupted during the standoff. Leader of Russia's communist party, Gennady Zyuganov, led Sunday's march and once again demanded the resignation of President Boris Yeltsin and his new government. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Q: What steps does the government need to take immediately? "Taxes need to be seriously reduced and every citizen should be guaranteed an acceptable standard of living. The financial system must be resurrected and special measures must be taken against corruption." SUPER CAPTION: Gennady Zyuganov, Communist Party Leader A separate group of 350 demonstrators earlier held a rally at the Ostankino television broadcasting centre, where dozens of people also died in clashes with government troops in 1993.
