Mental processes in psychology: university lecture

An introduction to mental processes and operations. The essential in psychology, presented in a few minutes based on an original diagram showing how the mind really works. PERCEPTION is the formation and mental description of an image through words, based on SENSATIONS. An IMAGE is a mental reconstruction of an object that is physically present (perceptual image) or absent ("REPRESENTATION"). Images can be not only visual, but also auditory, gustatory, etc. Words, as the basic elements of LANGUAGE, are signs, I.e. images that take the place of other images or notions. For example. the word house takes the place of the image of a house. IMAGINATION is the formation of new images starting from other images, also with the help of words. THINKING is the formation and naming of concepts (notions) through words, starting from images. CONCEPTS are complex classes and relationships between images. For example. The concept of dog is a class of images of carnivorous domestic mammals with certain common traits. PRACTICAL OPERATIONS are composed of movements (OVERT BEHAVIOR) through which words are expressed - SPEECH, WRITING (as forms of language) or which are controlled by words - manual actions, walking. AFFECTIVE OPERATIONS (affectivity) are the production of EMOTIONS through satisfying or not the MOTIVATION by the images and concepts that we have. Motivations are needs that can become motives to think and act. EXPRESSIVE OPERATIONS (expressivity) includes mimicry and gestures, which are movements that express needs and emotions. SENSORY-MOTOR OPERATIONS - eye-hand, ear-mouth coordination, etc. involve the control of movements based on the images we perceive. WILL (volition) is the control of the actions through words (verbal commands), based on needs. Verbal commands are related to inner discourse (self-talk): "I want to do / not do this"). ATTENTION is the orientation and focus of actions through words, based on needs (I am attentive to what interests me). Memory is encoding, keeping, and retrieving of images, concepts, words, needs, emotions, movements. Consciousness is the set of perceptions, thoughts, affective operations, etc. of a person at a given moment. The unconscious consists of the perceptions, thoughts etc. that are left ouside of this set, but continue to influence it nevertheless.
