(25 Jun 2006) ++ PURPORTED AUDIO OF TALIBAN LEADER MULLAH OMAR++ Geo TV - No Access Pakistan Date and location not known 1. SOUNDBITE: (Pashtu) Mullah Omar, Taliban Leader in Afghanistan: "Those who were thinking that the Taliban government would be eliminated like Zahir Shah's government through military means were wrong and we have organised military forces in Afghanistan. We have the control of a large part of Afghanistan, including the mountains and the Afghan capital is under tremendous pressure from the Taliban. And those who are ruling the capital with the support of American forces should not forget the fate of the communists who were ruling with the support of the Russian army. These people shouldn't destroy themselves. Afghanistan is a country of Muslims and a majority of Afghan people believe in Allah. Rulers cannot solve the issue of Afghanistan based on their wisdom and thinking." AP Television News 2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Hamid Mir, Geo TV Correspondent: "We were in contact with our sources in the last two, three days in Afghanistan and before releasing that tape on our TV channel we got confirmation from different people - including myself, I have also interviewed Mullah Omar in 1996 and then I have heard him many times - and some other people who know his voice. We played the voice in front of them and they confirmed that it was this his tape. Nobody can deny that this is not Mullah Omar but, yes, some Taliban leaders who are responsible for the media management they were definitely not aware. Like Mullah Dadullah has never released his videotape through the media cell of the Taliban, so maybe some Taliban will say that they are not aware about this tape, but nobody can deny that this voice is not Mullah Omar's voice." STORYLINE: The Taliban's fugitive leader, Mullah Omar, purportedly claimed the coalition and Afghan government do not have the wisdom to solve the escalating violence in Afghanistan, according to an audio tape aired by a Pakistani television station on Sunday. The tape, obtained by independent Pakistani channel Geo TV, was apparently made during a recent meeting of Taliban leaders in the southern Afghan province of Helmand, the network claimed. "Rulers cannot solve the issue of Afghanistan based on their wisdom and thinking," said the speaker on the tape, who Geo said was Omar, but whose identity could not be immediately authenticated. A Geo reporter said the tape also included Omar's purported claim that the Taliban controlled large areas of the country. Afghan officials had no immediate comment on the tape, which Geo said was obtained in an e-mail from purported Taliban figures in the Afghan capital, Kabul. Hamid Mir, a Geo TV Correspondent who has interviewed Mullah Omar in the past, is convinced that the voice is that of Mullah Omar. "We got confirmation from different people - including myself - I have also interviewed Mullah Omar in 1996 and then I have heard him many times - and some other people who know his voice, we played the voice in front of them and they confirmed that it was this is his tape," said Mir. "Nobody can deny that this voice is not Mullah Omar's voice," he added. The tape was the first purportedly by Omar since July 2005 when in another audio statement he vowed that the Taliban would continue to fight coalition forces. Omar led the Taliban in the capture of Kabul in 1996 which ended roughly five years of civil war in Afghanistan which killed about 50,000 people. The tape comes amidst the deadliest campaign of violence since the Taliban's removal in 2001.
