Low interest rates, high savings, and government stimulus checks have resulted in some consumers having extra disposable income. This has caused used car prices to skyrocket by over 45% since last year. However, global lockdown closed factories making the supplies needed for crucial chip manufacturing unavailable for months. The same can be seen with other technologies. Increased demand for consumer electronics caused shifts that rippled up the supply chain. Thus, with the decrease of available new and used vehicles, consumer demand for cars, trucks, and SUVs continues to rise. Now, both used and new cars are sold before they even hit the lot. The lack of transportation options has driven up the use of public transportation rates and wait times. Similarly, Uber and Lyft also expect to see a spike in riders.
