My brother Aaron, his 2 sons Brandon – age 11yrs and Mark – age 8 yrs bikepacked the Clew Bay Bike trail towards the end of August 2021. We did the trip over 3 days with one night camping on Clare Island and One night in Rosmo House B&B just off the Great Western Greewway near the quays in Westport. Day -1: We started in Mulranny and cycled along The Great Western Greenway as far as Achill Sound, from here we cycled along quiet country roads as far as Cloughmore pier on Achill Island. From Cloughmore we got the O'Malley Ferries over to Clare Island where we camped for the night right beside the beach. We had a great time on Clare Island, swimming, eating, chilling, playground...we'll be back to stay for longer the next time! Day -2: We got O'Malley Ferries from Clare Island over to Roonagh pier. From here we cycled through Louisburgh, Murrisk - where we had a fantastic swim on Bertra beach with spectacular views of Croagh Patrick and Achill Island. To be honest the cycle between Louisburgh and where the road meets The Great Western Greenway on the way to Westport was pretty stressful cycling when cycling with 2 young children. Because it's the main road and traffic can be travelling pretty fast on certain parts After our swim on Bertra beach we continued on to Westport where we had a fantastic meal outside The Wyatt Hotel in the center of town. We stayed in Rosmo House B&B just off of the Great Western Greenway near the quays in Westport – as a treat for Brandon and Mark for putting in so much effort on days 1 and 2. Day-3: We left the B&B at a leisurely pace and picked up The Great Western Greenway again just after Westport Quay. The Greenway signage isn't the best on the section going through Westport House, we had to ask one of the girls working there for directions. But once we found the Greenway again we were flying it! We stopped in Newport so Brandon and Mark could have a bit of fun in the playground. The rest of the journey was along The Great Western Greenway all the way back to Mulranny. It's a lovely cycle along this section, it has a nice mix of scenery and is safe easy cycling. So to sum of our weekend bikepacking The Clew Bay Bike trail....it was a fantastic weekend! We crammed so much into a very short amount of time and it's a trip that we will always remember. https://www.clewbaybiketrail.ie/ https://www.clewbaybiketrail.ie/along... https://www.clewbaybiketrail.ie/sampl... https://www.clewbaybiketrail.ie/ferries O'Malley Ferries - www.omalleyferries.com [email protected] https://www.greenway.ie/ https://www.clareisland.ie/ https://www.clareisland.ie/eat/anchor... https://achilltourism.com/ https://www.mayo.ie/ https://mulranny.ie/ http://www.murrisk.ie/ https://westporttourism.com https://www.westporthouse.ie/ https://rosmo-accommodation.com/ https://www.wyatthotel.com/index.html http://www.newportmayo.ie/ https://www.louisburgh.ie https://www.discoverireland.ie/wild-a... https://www.clewbaybikehire.ie/ The following is taken from the official Clew Bay Bike Trail website: https://www.clewbaybiketrail.ie/ “The Clew Bay Bike Trail is a combined bike and ferry route looping magical Clew Bay in Co. Mayo, including both Clare Island and Achill Island. The trail includes two short ferry journeys, one from Roonagh Pier, near Louisburgh to Clare Island and the other from Clare Island to Cloughmore near Achill Sound. The Clew Bay Bike Trail can start at any point and can be cycled in either direction. Two ferry companies run ferries between Clare Island and the mainland at Roonagh Pier near Louisburgh and Cloughmore near Achill Sound. One ferry ticket covers both journeys for you and your bike but tickets are not transferable - you must travel with the same company on both ferry journeys. Ferries must be booked in advance. Clare Island-Roonagh-Clare Island ferries run regularly every day (about every 75 minutes) Clare Island-Achill Island-Clare Island ferries only run in July and August on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Full ferry time details are on the websites www.omalleyferries.com and www.clareislandferry.com Electric bikes can be brought on the ferries but there is an additional charge and the batteries must be removed before the bike goes onto the boat.”
