On the 8th February 1587 inside the walls of Fotheringhay Castle, Mary Queen of Scots was led out to the execution scaffold which was prepared for her. She was accompanied by a number of guards into the great hall where on the scaffold were three chairs for those official witnesses sent on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I, and also Mary to rest before her execution was to take place. By all accounts she went to her death with poise and grace despite the fact it was performed terribly by the executioner a man named Bull who was not incredibly skilled with the axe. Mary’s head was hacked from her body, and following this her remains were then packaged up and were placed inside of a coffin ready for burial. But this would take place many months later as following being embalmed her remains were left inside a presence chamber inside of the very castle where she died whilst decision were made as to what to do with her. But the first burial site of Mary would not be her last, as she today is buried inside of Westminster Abbey in a huge tomb which is incredible in it’s design and it sits above the burial vault where she is interred alongside many other members of the Scottish royal family.
