🎨 Mastering Indenting, Layering & Subtraction Techniques in Coloured Pencil ✨ In this week’s video, I’m diving into three absolutely game-changing techniques that can really help bring your coloured pencil drawings to life — especially if you're after that gorgeous, realistic fur texture or rich, glowing colour. We’re talking indenting, layering, and a cracking little method I like to call the subtraction technique (and no, it doesn’t involve maths — thank goodness for that!). 👉 Indenting is all about getting your paper ready before the pencil even touches the surface. Using tools like an embossing stylus or a wooden clay shaper, I’ll show you how to press delicate little fur lines into the paper so your pencil skips right over them — giving you the effect of fine, soft hairs. It takes a bit of prep (which, if I’m honest, isn't always my strong suit), but it really is worth the effort! 👉 Layering is the heart and soul of coloured pencil work. I’ll show you how I build up rich, lifelike colours by combining unexpected blends — like Caran d’Ache Apricot with Polychromos Burnt Sienna and Caput Mortuum Violet — to get that perfect bay horse tone. Plus, I share why I don’t swatch first (gasp!) and how I colour mix in my head as I go. 👉 And then there’s the subtraction technique, especially useful when I’m working on drafting film. This involves using a Tombow Mono eraser and Slice tool to lift pigment and create highlights and texture. It’s a total game-changer for those finishing touches that make fur look fluffy, not flat. Oh — and don’t worry, I take you through it all step by step, showing real-time snippets from my Academy tutorials featuring a cat’s eye, a bay horse, and the sweetest little leveret (baby hare) you ever did see. So whether you're brand new to coloured pencils or you've been dabbling for a while, there's something here for everyone. These are the kind of tips that can help you feel more confident, more in control, and more excited about picking up those pencils and just having a go. 🖌️ Materials Used: Paper: Hot press watercolour paper & drafting film Pencils: Faber-Castell Polychromos (Black, Burnt Sienna, Caput Mortuum Violet, Walnut Brown) Caran d’Ache Luminance (Apricot, Flame) Tools: Embossing stylus, Wooden clay sculpting tool, Tombow Mono Eraser, Slice Manual Pen Cutter, Blusher brush (yep – raided the makeup bag again!), Sandpaper (for cleaning the Tombow) 📍 YouTube Chapters: 00:00 – Intro & What to Expect A warm welcome and a quick overview of the techniques we’ll be covering. 00:10 – What is Indenting?
