March 3, 1992. Ohio State’s veteran lineup overcomes some rough patches and Michigan’s far-superior athletic ability and runs away from the Wolverines late to win 77-66. I say “rough patches” because you can see (with 20/20 hindsight, of course) the blueprint for how Michigan will beat Ohio State just a few weeks later in the NCAA Tournament—or, at least, how they would have beaten Ohio State if that game was ever played, which the NCAA says it wasn’t. Speaking of which, Ohio State should claim a berth in the 1992 Final Four. It’s as legit as any of Michigan’s pre-WW II football national titles. Specifically, Michigan overplays the ball on defense, hawks the passing lanes, closes out on shooters, and harasses Ohio State’s ballhandlers on the perimeter—this is the Michigan team we’d see in March, terrific athletes who are focused and playing hard. Jackson looks like the only guy on Ohio State’s team who’s comfortable. That’s not necessarily fair to the seniors, but again, there’s a large talent disparity between guys who’d play 10+ years in the NBA, and the solid, smart veterans on Ohio State’s roster. Michigan doesn’t play all that well, but they play enthusiastically, and it makes Ohio State look pretty ragged on offense. Still, Ohio State was the better TEAM at this point. They hit 24 of 30 from the foul line versus only 6 of 15 for Michigan, they’re more patient with the ball down the stretch, and coming out of this game there was no real way to anticipate the horror that awaited. UM acts like knuckleheads at times in this one, too. Nice 360, Webber, you putz. The roof just about comes off the building in the second half when Ohio State goes on a 10-0 run to go from 5 down to 5 ahead—the Bucks get some runouts including a dunk by Funderburke and a tip-in by Jackson, and the crowd goes insane. Further proof college basketball was better then—it was certainly better in St. John Arena. Ohio State was in the midst of what, to me as a 17-yr old, was an heroic push to the Big Ten championship. The program hadn’t won an outright title since 1971 and, thanks to being swept by Indiana, was chasing the Hoosiers. IU would lose to Purdue at the end of the regular season, Ohio State would win out including a blowout of Minnesota on the season’s last weekend, and the Bucks were Big Ten champions for 1992. This is my last upload from the 1992 season and one of the last uploads I’ll be doing unless people start submitting tapes to be converted—we’re just about out of treasures from my collection. Again, if you’ve got a game or games on tape and you think “too bad I don’t know how to put these on YouTube”, email me and I can help.
