I was 11 and all that was on my mind was the incoming snow, school getting released early, and how it would give me more time to finish up The Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds on my 3ds. Come around noon, school released early for me in Eastern Georgia, and right as I got on the school bus, light snow was beginning to fall. Excitement was all that could be felt on the bus as we all went home. Once I got home, I remember going back and forth between doing what I wanted to do, and going outside and playing in the snow. Little did I know that just a few dozen miles to my west, chaos was unfolding. That afternoon in metro Atlanta, just a few inches of snow was enough to bring the city to a crashing halt. Interstates turned into piles of crashed cars, kids were left overnight in schools, and people were trapped for days where they were on the roads. This wasn’t Atlanta’s first rodeo with a snowstorm, in fact a much worse event in terms of overall snow and ice totals happened in January 2011, where the metro was covered in 2-4in of snow that stayed on the ground for NEARLY A WEEK. It wasn’t just Georgia, Alabama also dealt with a similar situation from the same system. So why did this event in 2014 play out the way it did, at least in Georgia? Incompetence and complacency in what was a tricky forecast a few days ahead, but 24 hours prior the threats were clearly illustrated to state officials, only for those officials to blame the NWS Forecast for why the Atlanta became gridlocked. As a Georgia Resident I feel like it’s warranted to cover this event given the recent snowstorms in 2025. I’ll be covering the synopsis, actions taken before the snowstorm, the timeline of events, the political and humanitarian aftermath, and how the failure in 2014 ended up impacting every winter storm in the state since then.
