Following D-Day, the Allies advanced throughout France and pushed the German Army back towards their homeland. However inside of Normandy, the Germans and the SS committed a number of atrocities against the enemy that they were facing. These were known as the Normandy Massacres, and one particular atrocity took place in a very religious house, Ardennes Abbey. The Abbey had been established as the headquarters for Kurt Meyer, the Commander of the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitler Youth. During the ferocious fighting of the Battle of Caen, the SS division took a number of British and Canadian soldiers prisoner. In particular, a number of Canadian soldiers were taken prisoner and were taken to Ardennes Abbey for interrogation. However following their questioning, the Prisoners of War were not treated very well. They were led out one by one to the garden of the Ardennes Abbey, and each was shot dead by a pistol and by an SS soldier. These shootings violated the Geneva Convention, and were classed as a war crime. The bodies of the victims were left for weeks before the Abbey was liberated, and after the war Kurt Meyer was brought to trial for the atrocity and massacre. He was sentenced to death, but his sentence was later commuted to time in prison, however the brutal executions at Ardennes Abbey had claimed the lives of 20 Canadian soldiers, murdered in cold blood when their rights should have been protected.
