The Sapta Jina Bhasitam Papa Vinasana Dharani, also known as the Seven Buddhas' Repentance Mantra, is the eighth mantra among the Ten Short Mantras. It is renowned for its ability to eradicate severe sins and purify the mind and body. This mantra originates from the Mahāvaipulya Dhāraṇī Sūtra, where it was taught by Śākyamuni Buddha at the request of Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī. The Buddha explained to Mañjuśrī that this mantra was collectively proclaimed by the Seven Buddhas of the past to save sentient beings, eliminate severe karmic offenses such as the Four Grave Offenses and Five Heinous Crimes, and bestow boundless merit upon those who sincerely recite it. The Seven Buddhas refer to the three Buddhas from the past Bhadrakalpa (Glorious Aeon)—Vipassī Buddha, Sikhī Buddha, and Vessabhū Buddha—and the four Buddhas from the current Bhadrakalpa (Fortunate Aeon)—Krakucchanda Buddha, Kanakamuni Buddha, Kāśyapa Buddha, and Śākyamuni Buddha. These Seven Buddhas, who appeared at different times, all preached this mantra to save sentient beings burdened by heavy karmic transgressions, guiding them back to the pure path of spiritual practice. In the Mahāvaipulya Dhāraṇī Sūtra, it is recorded that Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, out of compassion for monks, nuns, and lay practitioners of the degenerate age, requested the Buddha to teach how to repent for grave sins. The Buddha responded by revealing this powerful dharani, stating that sincere recitation of the Sapta Jina Bhasitam Papa Vinasana Dharani could eliminate serious offenses, including violations of the Four Grave Offenses and the Five Heinous Crimes. The scripture emphasizes that if one devoutly recites this mantra 1,400 times and repents in the presence of a monk as a witness for 87 days, all karmic obstacles will be removed, and the practitioner will restore their pure precepts. The uniqueness of this dharani lies in its ability not only to eradicate sins but also to assist practitioners in realizing the Unborn Dharma Patience, enabling them to directly perceive the emptiness of all phenomena. Karmic offenses, like snow melting in boiling water, are swiftly dissolved. Each recitation of the mantra aligns the practitioner's mind with the intrinsic nature realized by the Buddhas, leading to the attainment of wisdom and merit. The Sapta Jina Bhasitam Papa Vinasana Dharani is widely practiced and revered, especially in daily morning and evening recitations, due to its simplicity and profound merit. Those who sincerely recite this mantra can not only eliminate karmic offenses from this and past lives but also protect themselves from calamities, increase virtuous roots and wisdom, and progress toward the path of liberation. In summary, the Sapta Jina Bhasitam Papa Vinasana Dharani is not only a powerful tool for repentance and purification but also a direct path toward inner clarity and wisdom. By reciting this dharani, practitioners receive the blessings of the Seven Buddhas, eradicate karmic offenses, and ultimately attain peace and liberation.
