Dr. Dan Shapiro is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He has been practicing cosmetic or aesthetic plastic surgery in the Scottsdale Paradise Valley area since 1992 and all he performs is cosmetic or aesthetic plastic surgery. Dr. Shapiro performs both facial and body surgery and a lot of times patients come in, and whether it be that they want to do everything at once or they want to just have one recovery and get it over with if you will. Really want to maximize the result, a common question is, "Dr. Shapiro, can facial surgery be performed at the same time as my body contouring surgery?" The answer to the question is yes, he often does it. The main thing to understand and take away from this is safety is number one. Basically if somebody is cleared for surgery, we don't want that surgery to last too long if somebody has a lot of medical risks or if in fact we think recovery is going to be protracted. It is very common that we will do a face-lift and some other body or some other facial procedures in combination with some body procedures. The magic number, there really is no magic number with regards to age or how long surgery is going to be performed. We really don't like surgery to go anywhere beyond 8 hours. We think, commonly, we will limit it to about 7 hours if you will, 8 hours occasionally if the patient is very healthy. It is common to perform a facial surgery along with body surgery. The beautiful thing about facial surgery is it usually doesn't hurt. In body surgery there are many things we do to make that surgery more comfortable. Again, risk is always in my mind to make sure that it's safe for you. We try to take any precaution we can in terms of pre-operative clearance. We try to maximize your medical condition before surgery. We also take any precautions to help to make sure there are no things that can form like a blood clot if you will. We like you to ambulate pretty early after any of these procedures. The best way to figure out if you’re thinking about the surgery, if we think that somebody would be better off splitting the procedures in terms of, let's say somebody wants a full face-lift. Whether it be the forehead, the eyes, the brow and the face and the lower face, that's usually about 6, 6 and a half hours. If somebody wants to do another 3 hours of body contouring surgery we will tell the patient to split those up and try to figure out what their priority is. If in fact we split them up usually we can do that within 3 weeks or so after the first procedure. That is something we do quite often, but the main thing to understand is this is elective surgery, we're doing it to improve your quality of life. We really don't want to put you at risk at all. When you come in, tell me in terms of what you're looking for, we'll tell you what we can do. Again it's very important for us to give you the best result possible in each particular procedure that we're doing. It's not like we want to group them together and then rush through it and then give you a sup-optimal result. Just keep in mind that we're trying to do the best thing for you. We're trying to exceed your expectations. We want to make it fit into your schedule. When in doubt, rethink the situation.
