The Demise of the Echo Chamber: Why Having Friends with Diverse Ideas is a Good Thing

As the gap of separation continues to grow within the political arena, we see it filtering into our personal communities such as friendships. There seems to be an ever-growing intolerance towards others who hold opposing beliefs or viewpoints, and I am always perplexed why people feel so threatened to speak with someone not echoing their own beliefs. I co-host a podcast, Enlighten Up, which is spiritually based. Recently, we have been getting many messages, emails, and comments in support of how we offer differing perspectives that range from the skeptic to the fringe. We believe it's important to honor our individuality and keep an open mind to other perspectives so that we not only encourage someone to feel heard, but expand our minds in the way we see not just the world but ourselves as well. If we want to continue to learn and grow we must be willing to listen to diverse ideas that fall outside of our echo chamber. It allows us to expand our possibilities into an arena we may have never considered otherwise. It also allows us to maintain a human to human connection so that we may listen to one another with more compassion...something that is lacking within many people these days. How are we supposed to understand one another if we can't openly communicate and express ourselves? In today's video I address how we can bridge the gap of separation through friendships built on diverse ideas. To believe that a world where everyone thinks the same way is a benefit to society is a tragedy in its own right. If we stand for multiculturalism, we should stand for diverse ideas that challenge the way we think so that we can all grow and improve upon the world together. United. I am so grateful for my friends that challenge my way of thinking but also honor my ideas and beliefs. It keeps the dialogue open and allows for peer to peer learning, something I believe is highly undervalued.
