Sounds From The Corner : Session #27 Anomalyst

Six months before Anomalyst officially released their two songs 48 hrs ago, I sat down with the band’s creative powerhouse Christianto Ario in a coffee shop, planning his SFTC session, also rambling about music and its connection to a lot of different stuff in life. I remember he said something like “now that we gonna make SFTC session, we have to make sure that we sound and look right.” I guess being in a band is not just about creating good music, but also how to deliver the message, properly. Nothing worse than disconnection between recorded songs and live performance. Anomalyst care a lot about delivery, one solid proof is their brilliant songwriting in “Losing Game”. If you unpack the song and study its parts, you can find that the song consists of well-cooked arrangement, nuanced with couple of side tricks but it is really well done. It’s almost like the band has minimum surprise element but again I’d rather find confidence than adolescents. While their other newly-released song “Senyawa” is a lyrical think-piece, my personal favorite “Labyrinth” is epic, forceful and tidy but has not been released yet (you can watch it in this session, ofc). All of their songs are really well-written & well-thought. I’m convinced, Anomalyst will quickly shift their baby steps to leave bigger, more substantial mark in people’s mind. My first proper Anomalyst gig was Scaller’s album launching gig, they opened the duo and the performance was impeccable. Playing live, I can imagine, in near future they could offer that familiar stadium rock energy with their alternative, grunge-ish presence. Although in the future I demand more personality onstage, I’m keen to follow their development after the launch of “Segara”, Anomalyst’s upcoming LP in September 2017.
