The weekend will also feature D9000 “Royal Scots Grey” one the few surviving “Deltics” – a powerful type of diesel locomotive built to speed up services from London to Edinburgh in the 1960s. After entry into traffic in January 1951, some of the Britannia’s most regular journeys during its early life were to haul “The Norfolkman” and “The East Anglian” express services between London and Norwich, making the visit even more special. “Britannia” is due to arrive by rail via the level crossing at Sheringham – the reinstatement of which is one of the major milestones in the railway’s 50-year history. The crossing was officially opened in 2010 by fellow Britannia-class locomotive “Oliver Cromwell” so it is very appropriate that 70000 should play a key role in this year’s celebrations. The Britannia-class of locomotives were the brainchild of R A Riddles and aimed principally to improve the performance of express locomotives. Main focuses were on weight-saving measures, but also on the standardisation of steam locomotive design which was hoped to reduce labour requirements and also maintenance costs. A total of 55 Britannia-class locomotives were built at Crewe Works, of which 70000 “Britannia” was the first. D9000 dates from 1961 and at the time was the World’s most powerful diesel locomotive. It was the first of 22 “Deltics” produced as part of the modernisation programme that saw diesels take over duties from their steam predecessors. The mainstay of their duties were initially the Anglo-Scottish expresses on the East Coast Main Line where they regularly worked schedules that took full advantage of their 100mph top speed. Both visiting locomotives are usually based at Crewe and work a very limited number of special charters on the mainline and rarely visit heritage railways, so their appearance at the Fiftieth Finale event will be an unusual opportunity for the public to ride behind them. Throughout the final weekend of our main season, visitors will be able to celebrate our 50th Anniversary with unlimited travel behind special visitors “Britannia” and “Royal Scots Grey” alongside two historic steam engines and a heritage diesel from our home fleet! Powerful ex National Coal Board locomotive No 18 which hauled NNR trains in the 1980s and 1990s will join the celebrations along with one of our centenarian locomotives – either 7F 13809 which reached 100 this year or Great Western Railway No 4277 “Hercules” which was built in 1920. Heritage diesels, Class 31 D5631 and Class 37 D6732 will also take part with D5631 in action on Saturday and D6732 on Sunday. Tickets include unlimited travel all day so you can ride behind all five! We are grateful to the locomotives’ operators, Locomotive Services, and the Royal Scot Locomotive & General Trust (the owners of “Britannia”) for allowing the two iconic locomotives to visit. Don’t miss your chance to step into the shoes of a steam age signalman in the restored signal box from Reedham Junction which will be open at Holt.
