Néstor Martínez Jara - Embruxamiento (for Tuba and Interactive Electronics)

Embruxamiento is a work created for tuba and performer which explores the concepts of interactivity between music and physical gestures and the musicality within it. In order to perform it the dancer is equipped with two movement sensors which will trigger sound from leg and arm movements independently. In addition, this movement will randomly select between different electronic effects that are reproduced by the tuba. In this way there will be always a different combination of sounds. --------------------------------------------- This Musical-Theater performance was born with the intention of creating a retrospective depiction of my time studying in Amsterdam. It is an already completed project which was performed in my final recital at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam as the closure of my Master studies. After a kidney surgery last March I was forced to spend a long time recovering at my childhood home, in Spain. I had not had the chance to be there for an extended period of time for many years, and this situation allowed me to connect with my roots and the traditions from my homeland, León. Every day while healing up I would sit at my parents’ backyard, reading and listening to music and the sounds of Nature. That is where I came up with the idea for this project. During this performance I narrate my experience from that moment, going backwards until my arrival in Amsterdam five years ago, using a mixture of improvisation, live electronics, contemporary music and said traditions. I was not looking for an intricate and philosophical topic, nor a classical concert format. Instead, I wanted to present the audience with a story of my own experiences during this five-years journey. This is the most personal contribution that I could make and, therefore, the best way to connect with them.
