(27 Sep 2018) LEADIN: Berlin's international art fair is in full swing, drawing collectors and art enthusiasts to one of the world's most creative cities. Art Berlin features 120 galleries from 21 countries and is taking place in the city's Tempelhof airport building for the very first time. STORYLINE These twin moving sculptures are one of Estonian artist Katja Novitskova latest creations. Novitskova crafted "Mamaroo" earlier this year, and the work is now attracting attention at Art Berlin - the German capital's annual contemporary art fair. The international art fair in Berlin has been running under the name Art Berlin Contemporary since 2008, but last year it was rebranded simply as "Art Berlin." Organisers say the art fair is growing each year, which could be a good sign for the city's art scene. This year it's taking place inside the city's decommissioned Tempelhof airport, which is being transformed into a creative district. Berlin is known as a creative hub, where artists from all over the world are converging, but there have not traditionally been many collectors in the city to buy their work. "The art scene in Berlin is really an artist scene. Berlin is the world capital of art production. But of course it is also an important city for galleries, it has the most galleries after New York. And I that's why it is also an important trading place. The scene is here," says Maike Cruse, director of Art Berlin fair. The Los Angeles-based Nicodim gallery has a booth at the fair to showcase its European artists and create connections with the Berlin art scene. "It operate on its own rhythm," says Aaron Moulton, creative director of Nicodim gallery "I think that the galleries here are still dependent on Dusseldorf and Cologne or other regional parts of Germany for their collector base. But this is where art happens. In this country. This is the crucible where art is made." The fair is a part of the Berlin Art Week with events and openings in galleries and museums all over the city. It is a place for the who's who of the art scene to meet and create new contacts. "It is not necessarily a selling or buying city," says Benjamin Lee Ritchie Handler, director of the Nicodim gallery "But that makes for better parties and that makes for better community I think and I think an altogether more fun experience." Berlin is changing. The city's famously low cost of living - which first attracted the artistic community - is becoming a thing of the past. Studio space is becoming rarer and more expensive. But Cruse says more collectors are moving into the city and starting to buy artworks. "There are more and more collectors in Berlin. A lot of collectors are moving to Berlin. And a lot of young people are starting to collect. So the market is actually growing." Art Berlin runs from 27 to 30 September 2018.
