So, the journey begins. We set off from the UK with 3 days and 1000 miles to cover just to get to the ferry that crosses over from Denmark to Norway. You can find a map of todays trip in the video We spent the day in the UK travelling 191 miles down to Harwich which is a town in Essex, England, and one of the Haven ports on the North Sea coast. We had plenty of time as the overnight ferry didn't set sail until 2300 hours, so we just stuck to the back road. Off the ferry in Holland at 0800 hours ready for what was supposed to be 362 miles but ended up as 445 miles due to detours in Germany, it seems they repair their roads in Germany on a Sunday, which is a great idea unless you have to travel. The A7 into Hamburg was also shut so we opted for the shortest route which took us straight through the centre and cut out a 75 mile detour. Eventually arriving at our hotel around 2000 hours. Up early the next day, straight through the rest of Germany, into Denmark stopping for a lovely bit of breakfast at a local bakery, Another 400 miles and a hotel near the port ready for the ferry to Norway the next day. It was a nervous nights sleep as the ferry never sailed that day due to bad weather so we were hoping this didn't happen on our crossing. How I wish the ferry from Hull to Bergen was still running, rumours are it could be coming back. The crossing over to Norway was a bit rough. Now we are in Norway, heading to Lysebotn which is a village in Sandnes municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The village is located at the eastern end of the Lysefjorden in a very isolated valley that is only accessible by a seasonal road or by boat. We booked well in advance as accommodation is limited here. Having checked when booking our accommodation that the ferry would be running on the day we were there and finding out you can only book the ferry 2 months before I made sure I was booking it at the earliest date I could. It came as a bit of a shock when I tried to book the ferry, Yeah' they changed it to a passenger ferry for that day on the new schedule. It's a great ride back up the Lysebotn road which is the only way in and out, however the ferry ride is meant to great as well. I guess what I am saying is on a trip like this you will have to overcome a number of problems. Tips Book well in advance unless you are camping Beers Expensive Register for a FerryPay pass it makes life easier as there are a lot of short ferry crossings. Most roads are 50mph unless your in a town and Norwegian drivers drive at 50mph and will overtake you if your mincing a long at 45mph The roads are in great condition and its easy to make progress. There are some roads that have a hard pack gravel, which is fine to ride on, you just have to slow down a bit, however there is normally an alternative road with tarmac.
